What is a portable appliance?

A portable appliance is an item of electrical equipment that is connected to the power supply via a plug and socket, an example of a portable appliance would be a television or desktop computer.

Why do I need to have it tested?

There are a number of factors why appliances need to be tested on a regular basis, but the most important include:-

1. To minimize the risk of fire and injury caused by electrical appliances
2. To satisfy your Insurance Company
3. To comply with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations
4. To comply with all Health & Safety requirements. ISO 9000 & BS 5750
5. To comply with The Electricity at Work Regulations

What PAT Testing Involves

Formal visual inspection and electrical testing are the two parts which are involved in portable appliance testing.

The formal visual inspection is the most important element of a frequent maintenance regime this is because the majority of potentially dangerous faults can be highlighted by an inspector.

The following items of appliance which are tested include -

The appliance
Is the position and enviroment of appliance corrent?
Is there any damage to the external casing?
Does it switch on and off properly?

The lead
Are there any hand-made or taped joints?
Is it free from cuts, fraying and damage?
Is the cable secure where it enters the plug?
Is it in good condition?
Is it too long or too short?

The Plug
Are there any signs of internal damage
Are the cable terminations secure and correct?
Is the correct fuse fitted?
Is the cord grip effective?
Overheating or ingress of liquid or foreign matter?
